Hanukkah is a Jewish celebration that takes place about the same time as Christmas every year but the idea behind the holiday is something completely different and very closely linked to the Jewish faith. On each of the eight nights of the Festival of Lights as it is also known, a candle or light is lit on the menorah. A menorah is, for simplicity’s sake, a large candelabrum with eight candles. Each night an additional light is lit until all eight of the lights on the menorah are lit. Along with the prayers and the songs that accompany the tradition of lighting the candles, many children look forward to receiving Hanukkah gifts. While not customary, small gifts are given on each night of the festival.
Hanukkah gifts do not have to be large or expensive; the focus is often on something small and interesting. For a long time the tradition was to give the children some money on each night of Hanukah but during the years, and to adapt to the modern world, this tradition has changed in some ways. While ‘money’ is still sometimes given to the children more often than not it is chocolate money in gold or silver foil. This ‘money’ is then often used to play the popular game, dreidel, which is played during the festival. While candy money is often given, there are some households where actual gifts are given, not only to the children, but also to the adults that are attending.
As it has been mentioned, when it comes to Hanukkah gifts there is no expectation of receiving a huge present every night. While there is certainly nothing that says a person cannot give another person a huge and interesting present every night of the festival it not expected. For the most part, small gifts are given that are both meaningful and useful. If you do happen to be stumped on what to get someone for Hanukkah – there are eight days you have to consider, after all – do not despair. The simplest solution would be to say that anything is really appropriate. The only limitation is your budget when it comes to Hanukkah gifts.
While any present will really do Hanukkah gifts, there are some people who would say that the gift must mean something for the holiday as well. That is why many of the gifts are often a little more personal than your usual Christmas gift and often have some deeper significance. But even with this knowledge it can be hard to find the perfect gift for someone over the holiday and sometimes chocolate just does not really do an adequate job.
